SIFF day 3
May. 24th, 2010 12:49 amSoul Kitchen
a comedy by Fatih Akin, director of past faves Head-On and The Edge of Heaven. another film set in Hamburg, Akin's hometown. i loved his dramas, mostly because i am fascinated by the immigrant experience in Europe. (not a theme here.)
a hapless Greek-German restaurant owner deals with his business, his brother, his bad back, and his long-distance girlfriend. it was a touch too long for the subject matter, and pretty predictable. still, great food, great music, and fun appearances by older German actors in minor roles. i dug it.
Perrier's Bounty
Michael (Cillian Murphy, with stubble toning down his purdy mouth) needs to come up with 1000 euros before 10pm, or Perrier's thugs will break two of his bones.
the scramble to pay off Perrier is complicated by his father who is refusing to sleep (the delightful Jim Broadbent), his best friend/crush from downstairs being too helpful, and the Dublin parking authority's car boot deployment. mayhem ensues. (i took great pleasure in the Chekhovian introduction of a few sets of golf clubs in the first act.) lots of pistol-whipping and foul language. darkly funny with some good twists on a basic plot. recommended.
