a pretty good Major League Soccer player (under the salary cap) has about the same salary as a Senior Technical Writer. MLS has had a lot of financial trouble over the years and does not have the kind of deep pockets as an organization that the NBA, NFL, or even NHL has.

That's what I would have guessed. Have you seen evidence that some women are chasing MLS players for their money?

well, there's a current civil suit alleging that a rape happened two years ago. i hope that the plaintiff understands that she may get justice, but she isn't going to get a big settlement.

otherwise, the only thing i've seen was someone posting on seattle that she would really like to be a groupie and where do they hang out?

I'll have to point this out to a friend who once dated an NBA player, just in case she isn't aware of it already.

since i wrote this, i've found out that salaries can be much lower - as low as $12,000 a year.

What do top US players make? I know in countries where it's a major sport they can make tons of money, and US teams occasionally pick up an internationally known player, but I imagine that even the headline players aren't in a class with basketball, baseball, (US) football, or top players in individual sports like golf or tennis.

it really varies. each team can only spend $2 million total on salaries, plus the ability to pay one star a salary that is competitive with Europe. (Seattle's designated player makes over $1 million a year. the highest paid designated player makes over $6 million.) MLS is a bit cagey about the money, but i read that Osvaldo Alonso, a starter, makes about $65,000. prior to the salary cap/designated player rules, the highest-paid MLS players still made less than $500,000 a year.
