In the 2nd grade, we met. Possibly even before that. We didn't attend the same elementary school. I only ever saw you once a year, but year after year I waited to see you again. I wanted to see how you had changed. I wanted to talk to you so bad. You were so intimidating with your confidence and intelligence. But those were the same qualities that drew me towards you. It was the yearly Enrichment program that brought us together.
I remember seeing you more often as we were finally in middle school together at the high school. I remember still having that odd sensation of awe in my heart when I saw you in the hallways. We didn't have classes together. I couldn't figure out why.
Skipping ahead two years into the ninth grade, I finally had an opportunity to meet you that didn't involve me having to overcome my shyness, because I was there with a mutual friend. It was late summer. You were in a sun dress. I was in a tie-dyed hoodie. You were bronze, and moved so gracefully. The sun illuminated your shoulders with a soft glow and your hair glinted with golden highlights here and there.
It was only 15 minutes or so, and our paths were divided. When I saw you again, things were different. But those 15 minutes are a different story in someone else's life.
Things had changed, but in my heart I still loved you. I always did, and I always will. You are forever breezy and sun-kissed, residing in the most cherished portions of my memories. I'm so glad to be your friend.
You are a wonderful muse in the life of this gay man.
You were my first school crush...
