It's the latter.

As opposed to forwarding a piece of crap like this, my parents actually generated something that was false concerning something the IRS was considering (they said doing, actually it was a call for comment, so the IRS could figure out _what to do) to all of their friends.

I called them on it, with an email that was about as polite as T's since even I try to acknowledge when I throw someone under the bus in front if their friends. Compressed version: much acrimony, bitched at vehemently for humiliating them in front of their friends, no reply from any of the other people on the forward list and 2+ years of no comms period.

Idiocy is endemic and virulent in it's defense of itself.

I got kicked off of my family's group communication site (myfamily.com or something like that) for pointing out the silliness behind a meme pining for "the good old days" (given the tone of the piece, presumably when lynching was legal and you could still beat your wife.)

Haven't talked to a damned one of them in seven years. Fortunately, neither have my parents.

The best part? My mom (who forwarded this one to me and her friends/relatives) agrees with me and my methods.
