bicycle cops are the cutest form of law enforcement imaginable (perhaps eclipsed by security and meter folks on segways). i'm not particularly pleased when i see police cars, but there's something pleasant about seeing bicycle cops in their dorky outfits (with their beautiful legs) patrolling. in Seattle, they tend to be in happy places, like Pike Place Market or Alki beach. i think the idea of swift, near-silent transport that is faster than a criminal can run, yet nearly as mobile as being on foot is clever. and cheap. and environmentally sound. and healthy.

i've liked cushmans ever since i encountered my first golf cart. Seattle Center uses them extensively, and you can see them on nearby streets (like outside the Intiman scene shop). it's a truck! it's electric! it's ludicrously small!

Yuengling is the beer of my youth. it was a microbrewery before the term was coined, and they had a porter long before it was fashionable. it was both the cheap beer *and* the good beer when i lived in PA. i shared a duplex with a guy who grew up in Pottsville, and we killed many a case on our deck. i still can't buy it here.

Noh, Velvet Underwear, xenophilia

noh: (looking up some noh links stopped me from writing this yesterday; it turns out the the theatre company where i first learned about noh is in dire financial straits and may shut down. ugh.) i did a summer intensive in noh several years ago. it's sort of the Japanese equivalent of opera - a highly stylized performance that was once a widely known popular entertainment that has mostly calcified with tradition and become inaccessible to the general public, yet has a cadre of rabid fans. watching it is weirdly mesmerizing and doing it is an incredible discipline. it involves both dance and chant, and uses simple props and storytelling techniques. noh dance and kendo kata are remarkably similar. the high pitched drum and flute and the funny shouts that they use sometimes at the beginning of episodes of anime shows originally come from noh (and were partially adopted by kabuki).

velvet underwear: it's fuzzy and petable. i like to wear it when i can get it.

xenophilia: i have an affection for unknown objects and people(s). i like new things, and i like learning about new things, and i like people who like new things. i'm especially interested in trying new foods. (i'm not all the way into the "sex with aliens" definition.)

I think bicycle cops are cool too. I even had to cast one in of my screenplays. He just fit (pun intended) into the story.
