like draining a bathtub
Dec. 27th, 2006 10:33 amfrom a discussion the other night, here's a bit about how draining a river from below causes chaos. it's exactly like pulling the plug on a bathtub.
in January of 1959, the Knox mining company took a coal shaft much closer to a riverbed than the legal limit of 35 feet. nineteen inches of dirt really wasn't enough to hold back ten billion gallons of the Susquehanna river. the disaster and the resulting investigation exposed corruption throughout the industry and essentially ended deep mining in the region.
twelve of the 74 trapped miners were killed. their bodies have never been recovered. a brief clip of the whirlpool can be found at the bottom of the page here.
