worldmapper

i'm fascinated with worldmapper. i've seen the individual maps now and again, but not the full collection - countries are represented in proportional size by various metrics. private health care spending shows a monstrously fat US and a tiny (but still surprisingly large to me) Canada. toy imports - what's up with the UK? dairy imports - the US isn't even on the map. HIV prevalence...

Yeah. I'll defend the Canadian health care system to my death, but I still don't think it goes far enough. Loads of Canadians have private insurance to cover what isn't covered by universal healthcare (prescriptions, dental, vision, a few medical procedures, non-emergency ambulance rides). But the per capita spending in total, including both private and public in Canada is still much lower than here (although not better than everywhere obviously). Of course, with Stephen Harper as PM private health care spending will only go up.

Probably some non-elective stuff: like I said, dental, optical, non-hospital prescription, as well as fertility treatment and cosmetic surgery. Also, a lot of gender reassignment surgery goes down in Quebec, so that might make a teeny blip (although I'm not actually sure about the cost/coverage for that- I'd certainly like to see it covered, but I'm not sure that it is).

Now that is a cool web site. And a sobering one, too. Thanks for the link!

I love seeing those graphics periodically. I wish everyone had to/got to see those graphics on a regular basis. Rather sobering.

I didn't find one of those size-linked maps for % of world pollution or % of world automobiles, but as you might imagine America is always the largest in both. :\
