i'm 29 now. i'm okay with that. and i managed to not turn on the tv, so i didn't have to deal with the Kennedy memoria.
it all started at midnight at the Egyptian with Spirited Away. it was a smaller crowd than i'd hoped, thanks to some irresponsible teenager who skipped out on work at Jet City. still, it was nice to see
raevnos again, and the unexpected
frabjousdave. the subtitles were nice and large, which was good, since i forgot my glasses. i wore my peacoat for the first time in Seattle, since it was actually cold. it proved to me again that my body has really changed shape, since the last few winters i've been straining the buttons, and now it fits great, even with a sweatshirt underneath. i loved the movie. loved it. the Japanese cute is not the American cute. i love those little soot guys. there's such a great capturing of the experience of childhood fear, and the little rituals like holding your breath through the bad parts. and of course, the animation was luminous and wonderful and so effortless that i forgot to be amazed by the artifice.
we headed home and slept until the phone rang; mom wishing me a happy birthday before i went out for the day. we talked for a long time, and my niece was there, so i got to talk to her too. her voice has changed so much. i can't wait to see Andrea over the holidays. i really like my mother as a person now that i can't see her often. the phone call was good, since C woke queasy. he had time to pull himself together, but that made us decide to drive rather than our usual walking/public transport. it also caused us to cancel our Five Point breakfast plans and instead stop at Nielsen's. i had a potato, and a Napoleon hat. perfect custard, marzipan, bitter cocoa. the Nielsen's potato could be the finest pastry ever. Napoleon hats are a cookie wrapped over a gob of marzipan, with the bottom coated in dark chocolate. obviously, we blew the diet again yesterday.
then we went to Big John's PFI. the only reason we actually found it was because it was described as being "behind the INS." they have bulk herbs for sale in five gallon buckets, which are also their substitute for shopping baskets. they have a mind-boggling array of mostly european import foods for cheap. we brought home garlic paste in a tube, british custard mix (which i can make into pudding for the same carbs as Jello mix without the aspartame), chestnuts, diet Dr. Brown's Black Cherry soda (first time i found it here), rosehip tea, and chunks of broken German chocolate that will soon become peppermint bark. then on to Uwajimaya, where i got baby chopsticks for my hair, white miso, and bonito boullion. after that we went to the market and had lunch at the Athenian. this was our second try; it has nothing to recommend it beyond the view. but the view was great. then C took me up to Borders and bought me books, including my very own copy of The Silver Metal Lover, which i have already reread. on the way back i discovered that SBC has at least three flavors of sugar-free syrup and i had a celebratory vanilla latte. we got various staples and leeks and green onions for a quiche, then came back home and got all the perishables in the fridge.
i made reservations for dinner at Marrakesh, and for Thanksgiving at the zoo. i returned my brother Bill's birthday message from the other day, and we talked until C and i were almost late for dinner.
Marrakesh. wow. $17.50 gets you a five course meal, which you eat sitting on cushions at low inlaid tables, using your fingers. my entree was hare which nearly melted in my mouth. they wash your hands at the table, before the first course, and again before desert. the second time your hands are sprinkled with rosewater as a finish. everything was delicious, and we left thoroughly full but not bloated. the walls are covered in prayer rugs and the ceiling is draped with fabric and the music is Arabic afro-pop. i love eating with my fingers. it can either be harmless fun, or extremely sensual. or both. we split a bottle of Moroccan wine and it was unlike any other red i've had, with a perfactly clean finish. every new thing was a delightful surprise. i can't wait to go back.
we came home and we puttered a little and then a long backrub and snuggling. a good day.
there were several cards (one from Eric! i miss him), and some money i get to spend. i got the Indiana Jones box set, but it's full screen, so i can't open it until we can get that changed and it's killing me.
