while i generally welcome criticism of the Feds, i posted the info because i know several people who read this have friends, family, and co-workers in New York who could have been near or at the crash site.
to be pedantic, the plane was small enough to be under visual flight rules and no one was tracking them.
I wasn't being critical of the Feds... I'd have no qualms about shooting down aircraft that I thought endangered public safety. I really was commenting about that moment of clarify one seems to have in an emergency when you think about just how screwed you are and all the possible outcomes... if I was a pilot I'd worry about flying an airplane too close to downtown towers or what-have-you at the best of times... even more so if I had lost control of my aircraft and had to decide where-to-crash, and other scary shit.
Ah to be Canadian - we know that it would be the crash that would kill us... by the time anything is deployed in our parts, we'd be smoldering lumps of bbq'd beef.
