Why? Because if many social scientists are to be believed, you run a higher risk of having a rocky marriage. While everyone knows that marriage can be stressful, recent studies have found professional women are more likely to get divorced, more likely to cheat, less likely to have children, and, if they do have kids, they are more likely to be unhappy about it.

Oh -- you mean like the Career Men we marry? funny that -- it's not so much gender based as it is behaviourly based... whodda thunk?

Not to mention, Mr. Noer is having the usual fun with "Statistics" :>

'Women's work hours consistently increase divorce, whereas increases in men's work hours often have no statistical effect. "I also find that the incidence in divorce is far higher in couples where both spouses are working than in couples where only one spouse is employed," Johnson says.'

Well, duh.

If a woman isn't able to support herself independently, how can she afford to divorce? Two-career marriages give women the resources to leave if the relationship becomes unhealthy, rather than staying in a bad marriage out of sheer economic necessity.

And suddenly I understand why everyone on the Kentucky Gold crew married moronic bimbos who only ever wanted to be moms. Because that's the way to have a successful marriage! How could I have not thought of that?!? Obviously being a good caretaker is more important than being a fully developed human being!

Also, by extension, I'd bet that people in unfulfilling but not bad marriages are less likely to leave if there are children involved. Since career women are less likely to have children, they are more likely to leave a mediocre marriage.

I have no statistical evidence to back that up, but I feel as comfortable with it as with any of Mr Noer's findings.

My. Looks as though Elizabeth and I were doomed a decade or so ago. I'd pass that along to her now, but she's in a business meeting. Maybe I'll remember to do so by the time our next anniversary rolls around.

Of course, you gotta laugh at the Onionism of "researcher Adrian J. Blow."

...highly educated people are more likely to have had extra-marital sex...

God, I love my Master's degree.

I also liked the part where it implies that women who have contact with the outside world will divorce.

Uh, yeah.

But chaining your wife to the dining room table and not letting her meet anyone because she'll "Obviously" cheat on you is an arrestable offense. :P
