we're told why the Empire is, well, you know...bad. (As it stands in the final cut, the Empire may be just the model of development and efficiency that the slovenly Outer Planets need. Okay, maybe the Death Star is a little overkill, but we're in a War on Terror here!)
yeah, until they blow up alderaan, it's not clear exactly why anyone's revolting against them.

Yeah, but you never really saw Alderaan. I tell ya, it was a pit. Trash everywhere, burning tire yards, a funny smell that's a little like bad cheese.... Why, the property values in that arm of the galaxy went up 20% when the Death Star was through. And the space lanes, they're so tidy now.

"All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what has the Empire ever done for us?"
