thanks to hottipper [livejournal.com profile] raevnos, i made it to the Friends of the Library book sale this year. next time i bring a car. as it was, i left with a groaning backpack and two grocery bags' worth. i regret that i didn't have the energy to go through the comics and records, but i couldn't have carried more home anyway.

[livejournal.com profile] mimerki wins the prize. i found The Frugal Gourmet Keeps the Feast in hardcover with intact dustjacket, and amused the other shoppers by shouting and holding it aloft in triumph. for C, a history of WWI. for me, well...i have everything from a javascript primer to What People Wore and from Beloved to The Book of the Dun Cow.

starting when i was ten or so, i went to the AAUW sale. i'd save up to go (sometimes a whole $20!) and once the word of my enthusiasm spread i'd get the occasional donation to the cause from various relatives. my shelves still feature many of those acquisitions. that day was a high point of my year. the sale here is easily twice the size, and the sf/fantasy selection is deeper. there was a point where i rounded the corner into the second room (although the term "room" in a hangar is relative) and discovered yet ANOTHER table of science fiction paperbacks; i thought i'd grown up and moved to heaven.
