West
Glad it was a press screening. I was expecting a spy movie, instead it was a story about the paranoia and indignity of being a refugee. I always like stuff about east Germany vs west Germany, and there were charming details like the little boy's excitement at seeing his first Coke can, but ultimately I was waiting for something interesting to happen.

Kumiko the Treasure Hunter
Crazy woman dies of exposure.

The Internet's Own Boy
Well-done coverage of Aaron Schwartz's life and death with good explanations for lay audience members. I don't think it's worth tearing off the scabs if you knew him or his friends, but it is a great way to introduce people to the issues he cared about. Very cool to see passholders go in disinterested and go out moved.

Our Sunhi
I have no idea what anyone saw in her or why. Walkout in favor of book and a cappuccino.

Sylvain Chomet's first live action film was as delightful as my first viewing of The Triplettes of Belleville. Quirky, funny, moving, sweetly satisfying. I wouldn't have guessed from the trailer, but it's competing for my favorite of the festival. Recommended.

Unforgiven
This adaptation of the Clint Eastwood western, set in Meiji-era Japan, was my most anticipated film of the festival. Excellent work, begging to be watched as a double feature with the original. Definitely worth losing sleep on a work night. Recommended.
