i'm tired of being fed a story in three parts. damn you Tolkien, and the book that was too big for the printing process of the day. damn the bean counters. can i pick up a "genre" book sometime that hasn't been christened book one of a trilogy, cycle, or series?

so this week i read Song of the Beast by Carol Berg and The Briar King by Greg Keyes. (why did he drop the J. Gregory? it doesn't seem to be branding like Iain Banks vs Iain M Banks since the fantasy books are J. Gregory and the contract stuff is Greg and they're all listed together in the front of the book oh whatever)

mostly how i read all the books Greg Keyes read, and it shows )

but that's just my opinion, i could be wrong.

i wrote a post before about ComiCon, but XJournal ate it. and then i found it still on an open browser window, so i copied it to rescue the bits i liked after i wrote a replacement. obsess much?

short paycheck February is the cruelest month, when so many retailers are cash only.

however, the most interesting booth happens to have a store in Northgate. the Studio Ghibli collection will be mine. oh yes, it will be mine.

someone had a poster for The Escapist! i never saw where it came from and failed to ask. i don't know if it was a joke or actual art imitating art. i would have liked a poster.

i saw a real live furry.

i had a nice time, but it confirmed a few things. as much as i admire the picture, i'd much prefer to buy the thousand words. if i want stories about regular people, i'll go to A Guide to Visitors, or eavesdrop on the bus. i can't pay five dollars for a paperback in a sealed bag with a 75ยข cover price, even for a Kate Wilhelm story i might not have read. samurai bunnies are cool.

i'm all in favor of rabid fandom and open geekery in such a supportive environment, but why must people embarrass themselves by showing their sincere dedication is combined with lack of skill? chainmail with stretchpants makes me want to cry.

enjoying my free Conan, though.
