boing boing

i decided to get an exercise ball to use as an office chair. there's a theory of "active sitting" (on the internet this phrase is completely connected with selling various ergonomics products, so no link) that says it's good to engage in lots of small movements throughout the day. i've been gaining weight and feeling physically lousier since i've been spending more time behind a desk, so i thought this was a good start. (i'm also back on a low-carb diet as of this week, but that's another story.)

so far...

it came with a foot pump. i got a good half hour to forty-five minutes of standing and stomping in today. i don't know how much i'm actually making micromovements now that i'm on it, but i'm totally turning my tendency to jiggle a leg into full on bouncing. i have a dual 19" CRT set on my desk facing my "window" into the hallway, so i'm sure passerby can enjoy the sight of the top of my head bobbing up and down behind my monitor fort.

it also looks like i'm sitting on a sparkly red playground ball.
and i have my door open but i'm still getting high on fumes from whatever substance they make these things from.

Hahahaha! SCORE!

That sounds like a lot of fun! Having thrown my back out, I think about not slumping -- a lot.

BTW, I might not have been chiming in, but I have been feeling you.

Cotton batting indeed.

I did this years ago

and it was a huge help. The biggest part is that it stops the slouching - I had to start slow though, with only 30, then 60 minutes on the ball per day, and gradually work up to full time. Be careful not to 'cheat' and anchor the bottom of the ball against your feet, then lean forward.

Mine stank for a week or so.
