i've been listening to Kongar-ol Ondar the past few days. he practices throat singing, and i'm fascinated by the combination of guttural chant with high whistling harmonics. this guy has an album called Back Tuva Future that features collaborations, some successful and some not so. this
download of Tuva Groove (1.4 MB) gives the idea, if not a good experience of his full range.

if you're interested in Kongar-ol and Paul Peña, you have to see the movie genghis blues. utterly great documentary. if you were in town, i'd loan you xugou's copy. my friend hubris2 has been learning/teaching himself tuvan-style overtone singing (khöömei and kargyraa particularly) for the last couple of years.
(i can squeak out a few overtones myself too)

the first of the few times i have been moved to tears by music was when a professor friend had a visiting artist from her college over for dinner and he treated the group to a performance in a darkened and empty room.
i'm sorry to say that i can't remember his name, although it may have been Theo Bleckmann, but he and another man sung without words, accompanied by a steady beat on a rolled carpet. the sound of the overtones was akin to an armonica. i can't say what the tune was, only that the sound was incredibly beautiful and that i made my bones vibrate in a way that i've never felt since.

now i'm trying to decide if this means i should arrange an opportunity for you to hear some dhrupad, or if it means i should avoid it in fear that it won't move you nearly as much

can you suggest some specific recordings? i have access to something like 1.3 million tracks through work. doesn't mean i can get it, but the selection of classical and "world" music is deeper and broader than other places.

i've only had that kind of experience live. i think my body resonating is a component.

yes, though i've got seventeen things on my mind right now. do you have anything in the 1.3 million tracks that's over 10 minutes long by either Zia Mohiuddin Dagar (Z.M.Dagar) or Uday Bhawalkar?

hm. i have a Zihiruddin Dagar with Faiyazrddin Dagar performing Alap: Raga Ahir Bhairava and Dhamar: Raga Ahir Bhairava.
there's a deal of stuff labelled dhrupad but not by the artists you listed.

umm... that wouldn't be N.Zahiruddin Dagar and N.Faiyazuddin Dagar, would it? i've never heard of a Zihiruddin or a Faiyazrddin.

who's it by? anyone with the last name "Dagar" is at least roughly part of the tradition i'm learning.
