House of the Dragon
we've been watching House of the Dragon on Sundays. i stopped reading GRRM after A Dance with Dragons wasn't already written as promised in the back matter of A Feast for Crows and likewise stopped watching A Game of Thrones after it got past what I had read.* not having read the source material (or any Targaryen lore other than a couple Dunk and Egg stories), i'm able to really lean back and enjoy the show since i know nothing about these people or what happens next.
anyone else here watching? i feel like it's starting to hit its stride now.
i particularly enjoy Matt Smith's performance as Daemon and his murky motivation.** i think he loves his brother, and recognizes clearly that Viserys is a good man who is not a good king. i feel like he does have a real regard for Rhaenyra, based on their interactions in previous episodes, and i suspect that she's had a crush on him for a long time.
so... did he just want to show his niece that life was more than she had experienced inside the palace, and then things got out of hand? did he want to get back at his brother? did he want to create a new path to the throne? did he actually want to force a way to marry R because he's been into her for years? did he just want to trash R's reputation? ...all of the above? (i poked at AO3 to see how much fic is happening. first page is all Daemon/Rhaenyra smut, i'm sure there are a bunch of puriteens flipping out.)
i had honestly forgotten about the plot point of Daemon's unreliable dick from (i think) episode 1, so i initially thought that he was having second thoughts in the brothel and that's why he bolted. but if it was all about taking her virginity, then that explains better why he didn't stay to get her off.
there is certainly an element, in his interactions with Viserys, of just sighing and not fighting whatever assumptions are going to be made. kind of classic juvenile delinquent, except that he hasn't been a kid for a long time.
R running home and banging Ser Criston, well i'm sure that will work out just fine for everyone and the contraceptive tea won't turn into a future disaster...

C wonders: is V arranging the tea a rebuke, or an olive branch based on R's comments about princes getting to bang at will? time will tell.
*someday maybe he'll finish the books and i'll read them all end-to-end, but i think he's going to die first.
**plus his missing eyebrows really work with that weird white-blond hair.
