as noted previously, the hospital has charming robots trundling around. of course i haven't seen one since the other day, but their parking signs are definitely all over. here's an article about them.

Dad is doing fine now. other than being super-tired he's lucid and chatty and able to do things like feed himself.

the surgery went crazy long yesterday, because while the tumor removal went well, closing his skull and skin did not. the attempts at reconstruction took longer than the actual brain surgery did, and finally they gave up and closed the skin without plates or mesh, and even then there was still an open spot - some of his scalp is literally dead after being abused for 23 years. the tumors have grown both down into the brain and up through the skull replacements and shoved everything around.

the doc told us the various plastic surgery outcomes, which could range anywhere from the plastic surgeon finding skin somewhere soon to Dad waiting six months wearing a hard hat. there was even an option where they would have to make his head flat.

today i could see that his brain is kind of sitting like an egg yolk when you are separating out the white - ragged shell with a jiggly thing in the middle. (not that you can see brain, there is skin or bandage over it all.)

tomorrow will be a second surgery with the plastic surgery team to finish putting his head back together. i'm pleased since it means that they figured out what to do. unfortunately we never managed to talk to the doctor ourselves, just got stuff second hand from Dad or his nurse. so i guess now we'll get the real rundown when the surgery is done and the surgeon comes out to do the customary family debrief.

i seem to still remember how to drive in snow, which is fortunate since snow and also hella hills. (i have a soft spot for Pittsburgh and if i had to pick a place to live in PA, this would be it.)

in other news, NBC Olympic coverage still blows. really missing CBC.

That sounds like it would be rough to cope with, even while being happy about a successful surgery. I hope all goes well.

Glad to hear that the surgery went well, hopefully part two will be successful and your dad will be able to get on the road to recovery.

I'm super intrigued by the robots.
