imagine, if you will, a portal fantasy where we're the other world and mostly what people do is eat a meal they really like and describe it like they're a judge on Iron Chef (the Japanese show, not the US remake).

that's Restaurant to Another World . I've watched four of the six episodes that are available and it's just adorable. each episode profiles two restaurant regulars and how they found the door and chose their favorite dish, so it's easy to drop in and enjoy it as an anthology show.

I'm not, but this sounds right up my alley. I'm already looking into ordering the light novel too.

I offer instead Samurai Gourmet. It's about a recent retiree who likes food. In episode 2, he truly savors instant ramen that his wife spruces up for him. In episode 3, he eats breakfast and has *gasp* a second bowl of rice.

It's utterly delightful, in part because so far he is mostly eating perfectly common Japanese foods. So it's like an entire show about a guy going to diners and getting pancakes and being in love with how fluffy they are, only Japanese and with bonus samurai.

(I'm not going to try to explain the samurai.)
