City of God

whoa.

the best thing about City of God is that there was no apologia. we never got screen time devoted to how Little Dice's father beat him or he had a learning disability or couldn't deal with his latent homosexual feelings for Benny or whatever. no excuses, no moralizing, no root causes, just solid storytelling.

i wasn't shocked, repulsed. or outraged. i know a lot of critics were. i haven't come to an understanding of why...but i think i had enough interest in the characters to follow the story, but not enough identification with them to feel the hit of the violence.
