It was kind of obvious that Iris was going to die at the end of this episode. It would have felt like cheating if they hadn't. Of course, it's not the finale, so I'm guessing that they'll figure out some way to bring her back that doesn't simply involve Barry traveling back in time and saving her.
Two thoughts: 1. Do we know that was actually Iris that was killed? Barry's ability to disguise himself at Argus might suggest that he might have been able to fool Savitar. The problem, of course, is that would mean that Barry did actually sacrifice someone to save Iris which would be pretty cold blooded. So...maybe not.
2. Savitar alluded to something else that had to happen for him to become who he is. This suggests to me that if that thing doesn't happen, then the timeline will collapse, thus preventing Iris from ever dying. Messy as this would be, storywise, it seems the likelier scenario. What that thing is seems to have something to do with Caitlin and Cisco. I haven't figured out why Savitar is so interested in corrupting Caitlin yet, but I have to assume it is a necessary step toward his "apotheosis".
Barry's ability to disguise himself at Argus might suggest that he might have been able to fool Savitar. I wondered about that, because of absent Julian. Not that Barry would be in on that plan. But, unless they have more than one of those hologram pens, Barry still had it on him when !Savitar Barry showed up at the lab and HR blabbed. HR was genuinely distraught; he would not have been in on a disguise plan if there had been one.
I'm with you on point 2. Partly because they made a point of mentioning Pied Piper, who was a villain but with Barry's knowledge of that outcome never became a villain. Savitar's existence is a continuous loop, and he is directly affected by changes in Barry, such as the memory loss. He also has to exist for Wally to have his powers.
With Tracy on Team Flash, the timeline has already changed. They also all know that they created Savitar by shunning him, so that also seems like a given change. Still, Iris has been stabbed, so...???
