there's a drawing for the entire October Daye series plus some other swag. it's up for a Hugo this year, if you haven't read them you should consider catching up. i am not into urban fantasy but i can't stop reading them, they're just so well-structured and have a great ensemble cast.

(i feel like the Best Series Hugo was designed for the Vorkosigan Saga, so i don't expect October Daye to make it this year.)

the Long Shot shoot day is smack in the middle of SIFF. i don't think that i can pile any more into early June, so i have a little sad about that.

hey, photo-taking friends, you should do Long Shot. it's a very cool thing and PCNW is an amazing resource for photographers and fans of photography.

once a year i offer this (same) public service announcement: where to get free testing for sexually transmitted diseases in King County.

there are plenty of opportunities for free treatment here as well. University of Washington is a leader in herpes and HIV/AIDS research, and were developers of the Western Blot test.

in any case, your health (and birth control if you swing that way) is something that should be discussed before, not after. here's some help on how to handle it.

(the following links are reasonably safe for work, but the rest of the site is not.) it doesn't hurt to read the manual, but the safest and most reliable sex is solo.

while i was aware of the fine short stories available for free on tor.com, somehow i had missed the fact that you can download them formatted for your favorite ereader. (i was intending to instapaper them, but it's unnecessary.)

http://www.tor.com/stories

just click download and choose your format.

if you don't usually go all blahblahblah Ginger when i mention that soccer thing:

$10 general admission tickets*, March 11: proceeds go to Boys and Girls Club of Washington State, Save the Children, Seattle SCORES and Washington Youth Soccer.

it's a "friendly" match vs the Portland Timbers (who hate us enough to have an "Any Club Except Seattle" org and "FVCK SEATTLE" scarves) and has the potential to be very entertaining on and off the field.

might be the last time this year it's easy to get a single-game ticket at Qwest Field.

*kiddos under 5 are free, but people tend to stand the entire match, so unless they're small enough to wear in a sling i wouldn't bring them.

For those of you who are not getting email alerts or are getting the wrong email alerts, I heard back from LJ -- they know about the issue, & an official update will be posted in support. Right now there's a large que of notification messages clogging things up, no doubt over the next couple days you'll get blasted with all your back notifications. Support is working on this.

Please feel free to repost this in your own LJ.

(sparked by [livejournal.com profile] sirriamnis and javagoth's roundup on Roman Polanski.)

i am often confounded by how to deal with objectionable humans who make art. the work does not magically suck the second i find out something nasty about the creator. my general rule is that i don't give them money anymore, and i don't worry about money already spent (no buying new books/tickets/DVDs, but no throwing out of things i own.)

Roman Polanski really did drug and rape a 13-year old girl. and he really did flee the country to get out of going to jail. change the name, and no one would be questioning that the man should be back here doing time and it wouldn't matter how much time had passed.

i'm pained by the people and organizations who think that Chinatown or The Pianist makes him a special snowflake.

the list of protest petition signers is worst if you are a film nerd. extra-hurty for me: Fatih Akin, Pedro Almodovar, Penelope Cruz, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro, Terry Gilliam, John Landis, Michael Mann, Tilda Swinton, Wong Kar Waï, Wim Wenders. (others might care more than i do about Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, and David Lynch.)

the full list is very long and dense, so it's under a cut. Read more... )

is apprehending him at a film festival setting a precedent that puts dissident filmmakers in danger? um, no. and if Polanski had stayed to hear his sentence read in 1978, none of this would be happening.

i have a few months to think about how my money rule works with a SIFF pass.
