one of the things that facebook does is it prods you about activity it thinks you might be interested in. the technical term for those things showing up at the top of your phone screen is "push notifications". DW doesn't have a phone app, and doesn't have the newfangled ability that some websites do to send notifications on their own. but DW will send you ALL THE EMAILS if you tell it to. and from there, your email client can send you the push notifications. boom, DW is prodding you to go interact with your friends.

this is written for Gmail and the Gmail Inbox app.

part one: go tick the boxes here under "also notify me by email". [personal profile] siderea tells you how to get more emails (i know it's a wall of text about filters, that's useful too, scan for "tracking") and how to be double-sure you get all the emails.

part two: (this is important) sign in to the Gmail website on a regular computer. (i spent way too much time trying to get it to show me the desktop website on a tablet. it won't.)
once you have some DW emails in your inbox, follow the create a filter instructions. you want to add a label to every DW email for which you would like push notifications. fortunately, DW seems to have a single "from" address, so it's a pretty simple rule.

part three: tell the Inbox app to notify you when you get email with the DW label. instructions here, you want "labeled and bundled email"

it works. go forth and enjoy DW like it's 2012.

i've turned on the beta "Create Entries" page for now. it doesn't seem to have rich text support, but since i was on eljay before there was rich text support i've generally worked in the HTML editor anyway.

here's the custom tags page, since i had to look up how to do a cut. they're shorter and have less of the "does that one have a dash?" issues. <3

but check out how nice it is on mobile! Read more... )

regarding mobile, i'm still working on my workflow, but it is working better for me than eljay did (hence a recent flood of posts as i try out features from my phone, etc.) the eljay mobile client always was shit for content creation and commenting.

comment replies via email "just work" (the eljay reply form has been nonfunctional in gmail since i don't know when) - all you do is reply to the email.

for posting by email, i've added the post-by-email address to my address book so that my email client will offer it to me, and stored a template in my drafts folder AND in my phone's Memo app. (gmail has a labs feature called "Canned Responses" that should be able to automate the process on a computer. BUT it doesn't work on any of the mobile apps and that's where i need it the most.) i'm going to do more short, casual linkposts* - any time a website or app offers "share by email" that opens up your regular email client, you can paste in the header switches you want, format the link with HTML if you like, and send to DW.

i also have the beta post page on the home screen of my phone.

there are two mobile-friendly web views** of your reading page to try that are available by default. i have both of them on the home screen of my phone until i figure out which one i like best. maybe i'll keep both.

all the scrapbook photos? still look fine in the imported entries. so i think i won't be deleting scrapbook from eljay because i have yet to find an easy way to get a list of those links and replace them. i was looking at some SEO spidering programs for broken links, but since these links aren't broken it won't work so well.
i used DW hosting in this entry and it works fine.
i did break some shit on my own by forgetting that i had used Dropbox as a host at least once, and then i moved a bunch of pictures off of Dropbox to save space...
***
embedded video :(
thank goodness i almost never do that. that content is lost forever. DW just replaces the tag with a placeholder and doesn't preserve any info that would help you get back to the original content.
***

i know other folks have complained, but i'm seeing a rush of activity on DW and i've had longer comment threads than i've had in some time due to eljay wonkiness. i think i like the new apartment.

*remember when that was a thing, pre-myspace? i'm so old. my eljay was so old.

a co-worker has a new black vehicle, and discussion of naming said vehicle
led to suggestions of "Disaster Area" and "Hotblack Desiato".

which is how i figured out that it's been 25 years since "Mostly Harmless"
came out. (if you haven't read it, don't read it, it's crap.)

on the one hand, i appreciate that i remember details about The
Restaurant at the End of the Universe
enough that i didn't have to
look anything up. on the other hand, i'm feeling old.

i didn't realize how many pictures i had hosted with eljay over the years. i was unable to find an official download function on the eljay site.

this isn't the be all/end all, this is where i got to through trial and error without any scripting. this method does require accepting the TOS, as far as i can tell.

i'm working on Windows. the utility i'm using, wget, is available for all desktop platforms and the command should be the same. you can use any text editor that will find/replace with regular expressions.

software used:
wget for Windows: http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/wget.htm
you want the setup version.
notepad++: https://notepad-plus-plus.org/

  1. Go to your photostream. Example: http://ironymaiden.livejournal.com/photo/

  2. Open an album.

  3. Click PUBLISH ALL TO ENTRY.

  4. In the "Size of a pictures" dropdown, choose Original.

  5. Click Insert Pictures.

  6. Now all the pictures in the album are in a draft entry. (If you don't already see these as HTML code, click the HTML tab.)

  7. Copy and paste the draft text into Notepad++.

  8. Repeat the above until you have all of your albums.

  9. Go to Search>Replace.

  10. Select Wrap around and Regular expression.

  11. Find <img src="

  12. Replace with

  13. Find " alt=".*" title=".*">

  14. Replace with

  15. This should get you a list of URLs that look like this: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/ironymaiden/1176386/4463/4463_original.jpg

  16. Save your text file into the folder with wget.exe.

  17. Open cmd. (If you chose the default install location for wget, right-click cmd and choose Run as Administrator.)

  18. Go to the folder with wget.exe: cd "c:\filepath\folderwithwget" (Windows is a butt about copying and pasting on the command line, but you can do it. Copy the filepath, right-click on the title bar of cmd to get a menu, then Edit>Paste.)

  19. Now you should have a prompt that includes the path to the folder with your wget.

  20. Enter this (with the name of your text file): wget -i text_file.txt

all the originals should download loose into the folder with wget and your text file.

Edited to add: if, like me, you used email posting for cell phone pictures, this page may provide some clues in tracking down entries using eljay hosting, when you're ready to replace links in your imported entries.

enjoying the friending meme, lots of fresh activity on the friendslist *waves*

but this is underlining my problems with the LJ mobile experience.

dear hivemind, what can i change to make things better?

specs:

  • Samsung phone with Android Marshmallow

  • email client is Google Inbox

  • browser default is UC Browser, with Chrome and Samsung's "Internet" as backups

  • official LJ app

problems:

  • the official app doesn't properly display a bunch of custom LJ tags - usernames, community names, polls

  • the official app won't let me choose a freaking userpic

  • the official app can't negotiate CAPTCHAs

  • browsers have more functionality if i display the desktop page but still can't negotiate CAPTCHAs (and it's really easy to fat-finger the wrong link)

  • i can't respond to comments from email

has anyone found a better way?

i see there's a .ru app. anyone know if it works any better and if so, if there's a way to sign in with a .com LJ?

ironymaiden: (red)

my thread

hopefully this isn't all busted on the mobile client.

hi.
ironymaiden: (internet!)
[livejournal.com profile] mimerki posted a meme wherein they were asked to write about six of their userpics. If you comment "Meme Me" I will pick six of your userpics that you can then write about, thus maintaining meme balance in the LJ-verse. Feel free to propagate or not, ask people to ask you for six userpics, as you like.

knitting, yarncore

this is my knitting/yarn icon. knitting has always been a part of my life: my mother's primary hobbies are knitting and playing the piano. i learned to knit as a teen, got bored, and didn't get hooked again until i needed something soothing to do while dad was being treated for cancer. i do it because it is boring. i do it because i am always jittering. i do it because i need to always be making things and knitting is infinitely portable and forgiving of mistakes.

the icon itself came from some Diesel Sweeties swag that is long discontinued (alas, before i was knitting again) but i never forgot the design. i love the color and the lines, and the design actually was called "yarncore".

emo, h8

i don't think i've used this one much, but only because i found it after i had done most of my being emo on LJ. but hey, remember when people were miserable on LJ? i have it because there are times when i have to be emo on LJ. but i am often fully aware that i'm being emo on LJ and need to poke at myself and comment on it. (hence angry loser Anakin.) these days i tend to check myself before i write some screed of misery; i'm not sure that dwelling helps. OTOH, if that's what it takes to keep me posting, i should dwell more.

midas conflict

this was my icon for former Pirate A's Saga Edition Star Wars game, The Midas Conflict. sometimes i still use it when i'm talking about Star Wars, or when Leia feels appropriate for some reason. that was a fun game. (one of our famous stories was using destiny points in succession to obliterate an NPC who was designed to be a recurring villain. we also brought down a star destroyer.) as i think about it, that was really the first run of my Friday night gaming group. i think LJ is telling me we've been together for about 8 years. it so happens we're playing the current version of Star Wars rules right now. i should write about that; i was turned off by the specialty dice when the game first showed up at PAX, but the system has really grown on me. (i'm looking forward to a one-off extra-long all-Jedi all-combat session on Black Friday.) so much life stuff has happened in that time: jobs, school, marriages, divorce...

bust

i love the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial. it could be my favorite thing from Serenity. the idea that eating them could make you "bust out of your blouse" delights my inner 12-year-old. sometimes this icon is about surprise or absurdity. sometimes, it's about bewbs.

crappytown

this was a thing for a while, doing fandom mashups. this one tickled me to no end. the words are a reference to the Firefly episode Jaynestown, where Jayne is surprised to discover he is a folk hero with a statue in his name. it so happens that was also a thing in a Doctor Who serial, The Face of Evil. sometimes this is my "no shit, there i was" icon. sometimes it just amuses me. sometimes i want to use my Doctor and my favorite companion.

reader boys

original comic. this is my "talking about books" icon, which also encapsulates my love for readers and my disdain for people who don't read. i understand going through spates of not-reading. but if you say "i don't read" you're going to have to work pretty hard to convince me you shouldn't be ground up for food.

this came up on my facebook feed:
Why are you so angry?

i don't normally sit down and watch a series of 6 videos on YouTube, but it was really helpful to me - not only in trying to understand a friend of a friend running at the mouth, but in understanding what happened with the Hugos. the segment about the two groups involved in gamergate and their relationship will sound hauntingly familiar. the guy says he's trying to talk to middle-class straight cis white dudes, but he also helps explain their crazypants behavior to me (without saying crazypants).

i am sad that it looks like the person who brought it to my attention deleted it, perhaps out of self-preservation.

i recommend the videos.
ironymaiden: (internet!)
I loathe facebook, but I visit more than once a day. it makes me angry pretty much every time.
people i used to keep up with here are there. my brother and other family members are there.

i hate the design, the algorithm that destroys chronology and guesses what I want. lately, that seems to be memes and conflict. it makes me hate humanity, and the credulous strident progressives are just as bad as my racist cousins and the gamergaters.

it's my own fault.

I used to filter out shit i didn't want to see. i don't watch tv news, i don't listen to the radio very much. I get my national / world news from the Economist and a very carefully curated reddit account; the local from a fistful of blogs (since the Stanger jumped the shark).

but i know that means that i have protected myself completely from disagreement and othered people who don't share my worldview. so i read facebook to stay exposed. I've stopped muting posts. and after the Charleston shootings, i decided that i *do* have to engage. it's literally the least i can do. but that means that fb will feature shit that calls for correction, because then i click and comment more. slowly my entire comment history will consist of disagreement, corrections, and links to Wikipedia, Politifact, and Snopes.

i would invite more people here, but this journal has never been for my blood family. much of my old community here has shifted to fb. some social groups use fb as their primary method of contact - they don't email/chat/text at all. and for better or worse, the people i need around to keep me grounded in reality aren't erudite or engaged enough for long-form writing on a sometimes arcane platform.

I'm going to keep coming back and writing here as much as i can. the only thing holding me back is the shit mobile app.

tl;dr facebook like getting allergy injections, i wish this local organic honey was more effective
ironymaiden: (Default)
The new lj app for iOS is shitty. The stupid thing defaults to posts from strangers AND it truncates posts without any indication that there is more to read. And no journals-only filter. I see that I can probably customize it, but the defaults are useless to me.

iOS users, do you have a favored method for mobile posting? Do you do it at all?

So far I find the official app to be buggy and crashy and poorly maintained. I like the mobile site quite a bit, but the navigation is a bit unintuitive and I haven't figured out how to select userpics.
My needs are pretty simple (I never use the rich text editor): userpics, privacy, tags, my reading filters. Is there anything else out there? Is android better?

while i do it less often these days, i still like to make public posts. but i've been getting a flood of spam comments on public entries, so anonymous commenting is off.

not that i get a lot of legit anonymous comments, just that i feel that anonymity is a Nice Thing We Should Have.

(and why do spammers always try to sell me Louis Vuitton bags? otherwise, these things are generally socially embarrassing items like erectile dysfunction drugs or baldness cures. is there a stigma around buying Vuitton, which is extra strange since the product is covered in the corporate logo?)

and if you don't want your facebook name connected with your eljay name, don't even test that facebook thing.

interactions between eljay and Facebook flow in one direction: people who interact regularly with [livejournal.com profile] ironymaiden are likely welcome to know me on FB (where my public persona's only real obsession is the Sounders); people who know me on FB should only know [livejournal.com profile] ironymaiden through invitation. please don't share my content to FB or Twitter. if i wanted to share info there, i would. (actually, i don't mind if at some point i write a public post worth linking to as a webpage, but i very much mind connecting my real name/facebook persona to this space. insert threat of violence and/or humiliation here.)

also, as a PSA: i have never been the only ironymaiden on the internet. for example, i do not have a journalfen account or write fanfic. i do have a rarely-used Twitter account, but ironymaiden is not my username.

my DM pinged me to let me know that the December D&D errata nerfed Rain of Blood. Replace “Area burst 2” with “Area burst 1.” Also, on the Hit line, replace “2d6” with “1d6.” . he's allowing me to retrain, and i am resenting WotC right now. *sigh*

i went to an eljay page link without logging in and there was a takeover flash ad. that's horrid. has that been happening to free users for a long time?
